(…….. some words struck out by P.M.……) and André-Jacques Holbecq
I am sending you, as you requested, some geographical and demographic information concerning our OUMMO. First of all I absolutely need to clear up the confusion that seems to be introduced by the map appearing in the document you classify as D41-1, in section 111/1. This map does not represent our continent OUMMOAA in its entirety but an area of about 2100 x 1400 kilometres containing the great equatorial peninsula (Tr. note: almost-island) called WOAROO AAXAA. This heavily urbanized island houses our legislative and religious centres. It contains more than 200 million inhabitants, that is, about 8% of our total population (see note below).
Note 1: Our demographic growth had been increased for several dozen XEE in order to rejuvenate our population and be able to reach the ideal number of 6·128 (2.58 billion) inhabitants on entering our 4th era (see note 2). From now on we will apply an average birth rate of 60/1728 every 12 XEE to keep our population at that level, which for you is roughly equivalent to an annual rate of 13,7 o/oo
Note 2: For your information, the instant of this passage was notified to us on 9 July 2003 between 6h34 and 6h37 GMT, the moment at which our spouses, adult children and parents who had remained on OUMMO established telepathic communication with us (see note 3). We thank your brothers for their warm messages of sympathy, which will be passed on to the OUMMOAELEWE.
Note 3: Distance does not matter for establishing telepathic contact, but interference due to the presence of imaginary mass in the OUWAAM could slightly affect synchronism in very long-distance communications. This explains the margin of error allowing for a maximum delay of 3 minutes for the first telepathic contact perceived at 6h37. In no case could the interference affect the pseudo-synchronism in such a way that we would perceive a telepathic communication before its emission, since that would imply a violation of the fundamental physical laws of the WAAM.
=> The symbols appearing on this map are inverted in your document; the data box should appear at the top left. The inversion is attributable either to an erroneous pasting of the image or to a deliberate positioning to obtain a reading direction that places sunset (west) on the left, in accordance with your convention and contrary to ours. The typographical indications and the cartographic projection are therefore inverted with respect to our usual representation, in which the upper hemisphere, which contains most of our continent OUMMOAA, would represent the south for you.
The total area of the emerged lands being about 250·106 km2, it is easy to deduce an average population density of about 10 inhabitants per km2, but this average value would give a very distorted idea of the distribution of our population, 83% of which is grouped in 8 sub-equatorial colonies (see note 4), in which the average population density, calculated on the area of the lands actually inhabited, varies between 3·123 and 6·123 inhabitants per square KOAEE – that is, between 68 and 136 inhabitants per km2. I must also add that half of the total area – the marshy regions in the centre of our continent, the polar zone and the two annexed sub-polar blocks – is set aside as nature reserves, where only a few specialists in planetary ecology, botany or zoology who wish to study the fauna, flora and natural evolution of the environment reside temporarily. 17% of our population is distributed in the central colony WOAROO –which includes WOAROO AAXAA– situated in the upper equatorial region of this continent, which contains the main historical vestiges of our now abolished past.
Note 4: On OUMMO there is only one single vast and very indented continent. For historical reasons, the upper part of this continent –located to the south for you–, which makes up about 68% of the area of emerged lands, is very sparsely populated. The area actually inhabited is divided into 9 geographical blocks or colonies, of which only the main colony WOAROO extends south of the equator of OUMMO. The other 8 colonies, representing 31% of the total area of this continent, are spread north of the equator and are arbitrarily separated by natural topological boundaries –rivers or arms of the sea. Like you, we measure time according to the apparent course of our sun IOUMMA during an XII (day). The geographical reference is given arbitrarily by the small circular equatorial island OUAWABAAAE mentioned on the map, crowned by a glyph (Tr. note: graph, drawing, ornament) containing a circle that symbolizes the equator. This island serves us as the origin of time coordinates in a way entirely similar to your meridian of Greenwich. Thus OUMMO is divided into 25 time zones of 24 OUIW each (about 1 hour 15 minutes).
=> I suggest you extend on the map the lines that converge towards different population concentrations of the colonies directly neighbouring WOAROO AAXAA. Our 8 peripheral colonies represent about 31% of the total area of OUMMOAA. The inhabited zone of the colony of WOAROO covers about 19%, within a territorial band located roughly between the upper tropical zone and the equator. The polar zone, including two sub-polar peninsulas, makes up 9% of the total territory. It is frozen and desert. The legislative centre WOAROO AAXAA houses the seat of our council of OUMMO (OUMMOAELEWE), which is located on the equator, to the north-east -according to the positioning of your map- of the great lake AOUWOA SAAOA. You may also notice, in the centre of this lake, the island WOABAAAE, where one can admire a large translucent fire-coloured egg-shaped building devoted to meditation and religious worship. A splendid dodeca-hemispherical building nearby houses the official representatives from other cold stars who visit us on OUMMO, in order to maintain telepathic contact between the OUMMOAELEWE and the peoples with whom we are in relation. The telepathic relationship is indeed the only means of maintaining simultaneous contact between two star systems. We urge you wholeheartedly to develop this capacity, latent in you, which your children could use from the beginning of their puberty if they were educated in this direction.
Also appearing on this map is the island of GOABAAAE –indicated by a graph resembling your figure 9– where the heart of our computer network is located, concentrating the data concerning each Oummain (Tr. note: in Spanish we would say Ummanos, but I have kept the French term that appears in letter NR18) (see note 5). It is the only site on our planet that enjoys a protection you might describe as military.
Note 5: We prefer this term to ummite or oummite (Tr. note: thus in the original. In Spanish, ummita), which you use. We use indiscriminately, in order of preference, the terms ooman, oomoman, oommoan in our correspondence with your English-speaking brothers.
(……..some words erased by P.M. …….) André-Jacques Holbecq, the expression of my sincere respect and friendship. I must thank, through you, all your brothers and sisters who take an interest in our culture of OUMMO for their discretion, and remind them that open-mindedness and constant doubt are the outstanding signs of a healthy intelligence.
=>=>=>
Note 6: I am aware that the following additional information is liable to provoke lively critical outbursts from some of your brothers. I therefore advise you to weigh your decision to share it with them. I remind you that the stability of our social network of OUMMO and our psycho-emotional evolution are factors we favour over any necessarily subjective personal value judgements.
PROCREATION: Procreation is forbidden outside the OMGEEYIE (married couple) – pronounced “omghéèyié” (Tr. note: evidently a phonetic hint for French readers). This word contains within it the implicit notion of a freely formed couple, made up of two OEMMII of different sex and of compatible ages. We allow a maximum age difference of 35 XEE if the husband is older than the wife and of 23 XEE in the opposite case. The OMGEEYIE is authorized from the moment both spouses are physically fit for procreation.
BIRTH CONTROL AND PLANNING: Each OMGEEYIE has the inalienable right/duty to procreate a first child, whose birth it is entirely free to plan. From the birth of the first child it must take the necessary measures to avoid any pregnancy that might lead to a second conception (see Note 7). The procreation of a second child must be the subject of a reasoned application and receive authorization from the IWOONA OUIWAAGOO (birth-planning group). In general, this application is accepted if the first child has already reached an OUNNIOBIEWIA level (intellectual and psychomotor development) sufficient to give it learning autonomy through the domestic means placed at its disposal in the OUOULODAXAABII (audiovisual room), where it must do its daily exercises. This level is usually reached between 7,6 and 8,5 Earth years.
Note 7: Contraceptive means by hormonal regulation are very rarely used on OUMMO, and we have no equivalent of your male condoms or intrauterine devices. Control is achieved through perfect knowledge of the ovulation cycle of each YIE, by means of domestic monitoring systems integrated into the private XANMOO (computer and peripheral systems) of the couple's XAABII (circular house). These data are strictly private, and the SANMOO AYOUBAA (global computer network) learns of them only through regular, anonymous dissemination for purely statistical purposes.
The procreation of a third child is currently discouraged. It is rare for an OMGEEYIE itself to make the application. The ONAWO WOUA educational centre, attended by the couple's religious minister AO OUIA OEMII, may however make the proposal to an OMGEEYIE whose other two children have shown exceptional aptitudes confirming the excellent genetic complementarity of the parents. A third child is occasionally accepted if the first two are OU OUYIIE (girls). A fourth child is never authorized.
MORTALITY AND LONGEVITY: Demographic stability is currently the rule on OUMMO. This entails establishing a strict balance between births and deaths. Converted to an Earth year, the mortality rate on OUMMO reaches 13,7 0/00.
Our medical techniques allow us to compensate for the physiological degenerations linked to old age. Our elderly do not suffer from the bone or cardiovascular problems or the forms of cancer that are endemic on your OYAGAA. However, in our old age we suffer a cerebral degeneration that we neither know how nor wish to avoid. This degeneration gradually deprives our elderly of all faculty of telepathic emission. Oral transmission being no longer possible either, as a result of the total sclerosis of the vocal cords, they are condemned to silence. The degeneration continues until the total disappearance of all faculty of telepathic reception. This disappearance of all natural faculties of communication is accompanied by a slow and inexorable deterioration of the memory capacities. For our elderly this results in a progressive loss of autonomy, which entails an unacceptable harm to the integrity of the OEMII and to the feeling of personal respect that you call dignity.
(……….......about ¾ of a line struck out by P.M. ..................…….). If life were reduced to the autonomous maintenance of the vegetative functions, our longevity could then exceed 140 Earth years. However, if we exclude accidental deaths, death on OUMMO is a voluntary act that takes place -save exceptions- between 432 XEE and 575 XEE (from 91 to 121 Earth years).
CEREMONY OF CONVERSION OF THE OEMII INTO HELIUM: Death is for us the ultimate goal of existence and is of as capital an importance as the marriage celebration, the conception and the birth of a child. The ceremony of conversion into helium, the equivalent for us of cremation, is meticulously prepared by the elderly person who is preparing to die. This decision is generally taken jointly by the two spouses, who communicate it to their children as well as to their minister of worship. The preparation of a funeral hall is then planned for the OMGEEYIE, which gathers together all its children and their spouses down to the fifth generation. A frugal meal is followed by a moving farewell session, at the end of which the family is invited to watch a documentary covering selected scenes summarizing the past life of the OMGEEYIE that is preparing to depart. The old spouses then withdraw side by side, holding hands, facing those present, behind a glass that slowly becomes opaque, so that they may enjoy once more the happiness of contemplating, through their descendants, their active contribution to the perpetuation and improvement of the social network of OUMMO and the fulfilment of a whole life.
The XANMOO that permanently supervises the biological parameters of the two OEMII determines the precise instant at which a deep peace pervades the OMGEEYIE, which indicates entry into the meditative phase revealing acceptance of the abandonment of the OEMII. A flash of blue light indicates to those present the moment of emission of a high-frequency gravitational field that causes instant death by destruction of the brain cells. The process of converting the atoms making up the body's cells into helium is begun immediately. Part of this helium is diffused into the hall, mixed with an aromatic composition specially prepared for the occasion by the OMGEEYIE itself. Each member of the family then symbolically breathes in the last effluvia of their ancestors, for whom voluntary integration into the collective psyche of OUMMO is already effective.

(Three lines follow, erased at PM's request)
I will mention, as an anecdote, two brothers of the first group that visited you. URIO 79, son of IYIA 5, amazed by the complexity of your psychology, was reluctant to leave your planet of his own free will. ODDIOA 1, son of ISSAAO 132, chosen for his high morality and his experience of other non-Ummite civilizations – more and less evolved than yours –, could not bear the terrible reality of the daily sufferings endured by your peoples. He had to return to UMMO as soon as a new group of expeditionaries relieved him.
Other brothers were also emotionally affected to varying degrees because of their stay on Earth. At present, save exceptions, we limit the duration of our expeditions to 12 XEE (about two years and six months). Both during our return journey and on our arrival on UMMO we must undergo a process of psychological conformation whose duration varies according to each individual – you would say according to the corresponding degree of psychological disturbance. We use the duration of the return journey to OUMMO to observe the necessary quarantine period, which destroys every organism, pathogenic or not, that we inevitably carry from OYAGAA by the simple fact of breathing or consuming food on that planet.
Our physiology allows us to live on your planet with practically no restrictions. The acceleration due to gravity at the surface of OYAGAA is favourable to us, and the lower oxygen content of your atmosphere affects us very little, since our organism compensates by adapting the necessary haematological parameters. Because our muscular performance is by nature more powerful than yours, our strength would no doubt seem surprising to you. The only unpleasant parameters for us on OYAGAA are the high temperature, which limits our mobility, and the strong brightness of the sun. We therefore prefer winter, twilight or night-time activities. We nevertheless respect the circadian rhythm inherent to OUMMO –which we have readjusted to exactly thirty Earth hours–, which entails alternating day and night activities. We systematically protect our eyes with sterilized soft contact lenses whose central part, covering our iris, is made of a substance that has the property of becoming opaque according to the brightness received. On OYAGAA this substance turns slightly pinkish, so as to transform the range of light frequencies emitted by your sun into a spectrum closer to the one familiar to us on UMMO. In case of strong glare we sometimes use your sunglasses, but we find them impractical. We protect our nostrils and ear canals with an antiseptic solution, which we also apply to our armpits, our ankles and the other areas of the body with heavy perspiration. The smell of apocrine sweat in an advanced state of decomposition is hardly tolerable to us. Some of your perfumes, sometimes among the most expensive, literally disgust us. We consider that the best body odour is the absence of odour or the mere residual fragrance of bath salts. It is astonishing that cosmetic products as inexpensive as deodorants based on aluminium salts or ethyl alcohol are so little used by your fellow beings, particularly males.
Apart from the need to protect ourselves against your viruses and pathogenic micro-organisms, our only real need, not specific to OYAGAA, is to inhale regularly an aerosol – which you might describe as antihistamine – to prevent any allergic reaction from exposure to substances necessarily exotic for us (pollens, insect bites, food, fruit drinks, etc,). We take extreme care over our diet. Some foods, commonplace for you, cannot be assimilated by our digestive system. We must continually monitor ourselves to detect the early symptoms of possible anaphylaxis. We always carry with us an effective medicine which we sometimes need to administer to ourselves urgently to prevent the eventuality of an anaphylactoid or anaphylactic shock. We must also take great care not to leave any revealing trace of our presence such as, for example, bits of nails or hair. We are model guests for the staff of the hotels where we stay, who find practically no trace of use of the bathroom or the bed. We make a point of splashing water around, wasting toilet paper, wetting the towels and exaggerating the creases in the sheets to avoid possible suspicion.
Our behavioural mimicry is curiously rather similar to that of your fellow beings, though with notable differences. Our silent laughter -I am referring here to that of adult Ummites- seems very strange to you, and some of your brothers have sometimes taken it for choking on food going down the wrong way or for an asphyxiating hiccup. For our part, we find your laughter rather surprising. Yawning exists among us, but it is generally a symptom of slight hypoglycaemia and denotes the need to eat, whereas tiredness shows itself in a feeling of heaviness of the eyelids, itching of the eyes and difficulty in concentrating. We smile exactly as you do and for the same reasons. We are also subject to weeping and tears in the same emotional conditions as you. We feel no shame at all at weeping, and tears come easily to our eyes, as does blushing to our cheeks. We weep silently, however, except at moments of great sadness, in which case we emit a faint moan produced by the thread of air escaping from our larynx, constricted by this strong feeling of sadness. Unlike you, we cannot speak while weeping, since the emotion of the moment completely blocks our vocal cords. The intensity of emotional flows is about twice as great in our case as in yours.
Our morphological similarities are truly surprising. My brothers and sisters who live among you do not fall outside the subjective framework of normality associated with the broad morphological spectrum formed by your various ethnic groups. If we presented ourselves to you dressed according to your fashion, and announced our non-terrestrial origin, you would not at first be able to believe our word. Only a careful visual examination would alert you through a few curious details that a layman would overlook or judge of little importance.
The reverse would not happen in the same way on UMMO, since only a small percentage of your adult population could visually pass for one of our kind, morphological diversity being much smaller on UMMO than on Earth. The percentage would, however, increase appreciably if we focused on women, on prepubescent youngsters or on younger children.
*******************
Your technological development in recent years helps us a great deal in our mission of scientific research. The miniaturization of electronic components and energy sources allows you to use daily various devices that you carry with you at all times. We have easily been able to disguise our own measuring instruments as mobile phones (“GSM” in the original - Tr. note), cameras or portable music players that do not attract attention. The systematic use of handbags by your women allows us (I speak here on my own behalf and on that of my Ummite sisters) to incorporate devices for recording sounds, images and biological parameters without any difficulty.
You must not fear the exponential technological advance that seems to overwhelm some of your brothers. Technological progress is a necessary stage for the development of your social network. The speed with which your worldwide information network, the INTERNET, has appeared is healthy. This network shows great functional similarities with the information base accessible through our planetary computer network on UMMO. The difference lies essentially in the interactivity of the system with the user and in the presentation of the information. Our computers also have the capacity to take certain initiatives or to anticipate our requests within a certain limit. They play not only an informative role but also an educational and medical one. They are to some extent an integral part of our social network.
*****************************
As a further answer, I would point out that the informative document you refer to as JS 88 (Ndw: D1378), on which your brother made his comments, was not intended to be made public. We regret that it has been, but we nevertheless stand by its content, which remains valid for the most part. I wish, however, to remind you that the only reason for activating the plan of intervention described in that report would be the certainty of the imminent self-destruction of your race. For your information, according to the parameters established on 13 November 2002, the probability of self-destruction does not reach 1/12 before your year 2028. Without wishing to alarm you, we consider that this probability will exceed 1/2 in 2073 and that the maximum limit of 11/12 will be reached in 2166. Although these deadlines have regularly been pushed back since 1989 each time we recalculate them, the events following the attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States of America introduced into certain parameters of our predictive model important changes still in force today.
Other reasons, however, prompt us to extend the body of presumptions that make it possible to reaffirm our actual presence on Earth, in order to oblige your official bodies to give a positive answer to a simple request that we consider absolutely legitimate. These bodies undeniably know of our extraterrestrial nature, without however deigning to regard us as reliable interlocutors, a behaviour we cannot accept as rational. Consequently, the phase of contacts, including reports sent to a few Earthlings scattered around the world as well as deliberately visible incursions of our OUEWA (spacecraft) into your airspace, will continue to accelerate progressively until responses are obtained from your Governments under the pressure of the legitimate questions of witnesses, of the sensationalist press and of the non-governmental organizations with which we also maintain contact. It would surprise you to see the real panic that seizes the minds of those in charge at the top of the military structures of some of your great nations at the mere mention of the word UMMOAELEWE, without any logical reason that could, in our eyes, explain it.
Sir, this document answers, I hope, your personal questions .Please forgive me for its meagre informative content.
I hope you will allow me, Mr(xxxxxxxxxxx), to place my hand symbolically on your chest to express my friendship.
